They will share their story of how they raised MLB Star and 2011 American League MVP Detroit Tigers superstar pitcher Justin Verlander. The Verlanders message resonates with any group that embraces values emphasizing teamwork, sacrifice and reaching for the best within all of us.

The Verlanders recently published book entitled “Rocks Across the Pond” chronicles this family’s incredible journey from it’s rural Virginia Roots to Detroit, MLB and superstardom. They enjoy speaking with parents, coaches, teachers and youth groups about the vital role they play in helping young people to follow their dreams. Sharing the belief that each child is born with a gift to be nurtured is their passion.

Raising children represents a labor of love and commitment to being the best parent one can be. Regardless of how much talent a child may possess, young people will not thrive and reach their full potential without the guidance and mentoring of key individuals and loved ones in their lives. Please make plans to attend this inspirational talk.

The Rev. Dr. Sandra Levy-Achtemeier is the speaker for the September 13, 7:00 p.m. Order of St. Luke meeting in the All Saints Parish Hall, 8787 River Rd.. There will be a Service of Healing and Eucharist at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. It is free and all are welcome. Her topic is “Creating a Flourishing Life, Through Suffering and Loss”.

She is a psychologist, writer and Theologian-in-Residence at historic St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond and the author of "Imagination and the Journey of Faith" (2008) in addition to her new book "Flourishing Life Now and in the Time to Come."

In her new book she offers some answers concerning how we can flourish across our whole lives. Her new book deals with creating a rich life even through suffering and loss. The quest to find how people are able, not just to get through bad times but come through them thriving, began for her in her experience as a psychologist years ago. More recently, she experienced some of what she writes about when her first husband of 35 years died of Alzheimer's Disease.

With her life experiences she is able to interweave neuroscience, psychology and theology in her holistic approach to life while she examines our ability to adapt and reset goals in changed circumstances, the importance of an emotionally supportive community in reshaping our identity and sense of well-being, and the importance of a conversation partner who would facilitate the re-writing of one's life story to integrate loss with overall meaning.
